How will I lose weight with obesity surgery?

There are different surgical methods, but let’s give a short answer to this question through the sleeve gastrectomy, which is the most frequently applied. In sleeve gastrectomy surgery, 70% of the stomach is removed and the stomach is reduced. As the stomach shrinks, food intake decreases. In addition, the presence of the hormone ghrelin, which we call the hunger hormone, in the removed part reduces the feeling of hunger. Weight loss occurs because both hunger is not felt and stomach capacity is reduced.

What are the conditions for obesity surgery?

The body mass index (BMI) of the World Health Organization (WHO) is used for obesity surgery. According to this calculation, if your BMI is over 40, you are qualified for bariatric surgery. If your BMI is over 35 and you have problems such as hypertension, heart or diabetes, you can still have bariatric surgery. Of course, apart from these, your age, ability to receive general anesthesia and your psychological state should be suitable.

Which is the most appropriate bariatric surgery?

There are 5 different surgical methods. However, the most applied method is the sleeve gastrectomy (tube stomach) method. Depending on your situation, the doctor decides which method to use. After the preliminary interview, all data such as your weight loss history, weight, body mass index, and additional diseases, the best surgical method is selected for you.

Why is gastric sleeve surgery performed the most?

Gastric sleeve surgery has many advantages compared to other methods, few disadvantages and being relatively more suitable for the body, making it the most preferred bariatric surgery method. It is among the important advantages of sleeve gastrectomy that it can be converted to other methods when necessary, it is a relatively easy and short operation, the hospital stay and the recovery period are shorter.

How much weight will I lose after the surgery?

The amount of weight lost is related to the current weight of the patient. The amount of weight and the duration of weight loss will not be the same for a patient weighing 150 kilograms and a patient weighing 100 kilograms. At the same time, the patient’s compliance with his diet, exercising without interruption, paying attention to fluid intake will also affect the amount of weight lost. Therefore, it would not be correct to give an exact figure. However, at the end of 1 year, we expect the patient to lose 50-80 kilos, considering the weight at which he underwent surgery and assuming that he had sleeve gastrectomy.

How will my monthly weight loss process be?

The weight loss process after obesity surgery is a marathon. Our expectation is that at the end of 1 year, our patient will lose at least 70 percent of their excess weight. The weight loss process starts quickly in the first month and continues at high speed for the first 6 months. The amount of weight lost and the duration of weight loss will vary according to the current weight of the patient. The weight loss process continues after 1 year until 2 years, although not as long as the first year.

What is required for a good surgery?

A good team is essential for a good bariatric surgery process. It is important that the surgeon or surgeons specialize in bariatric surgery and be at a satisfactory level in number. It is a great advantage that the assistant surgery team specializes in bariatric surgery. (We have been working with the same surgical team for a long time, so we can act with team logic and we have a comfortable operation thanks to the trust we have in each other.) The quality of the equipment is as important as the team. There are instruments and devices of different qualities in bariatric surgery. We use high-quality, FDA-approved tools and devices to minimize equipment-related risks. The conditions of the hospital are another important issue. Factors such as the operating room, examination facilities, patient rooms, and personnel directly affect the surgery, pre- and post-operatively. Apart from all these, close follow-up in the post-operative period and when the patient adapts to this close follow-up, there is not much reason not to have a successful weight loss process.
